Qaddafi Killed, Say Libyan Officials

Reuters adds new information about Qaddafi, with no confirmation from the U.S. State Department about the news. “He was also hit in his head,” and National Transitional Council official told the news outlet. “There was a lot of firing against his group and he died.”

The Longest Dictatorship in the World is Brought Down to its Knees

This development, with the capital creating its own nationalist mythos of revolutionary participation, is the very best thing that could have happened. Instead of being liberated (and somewhat subjected) from the outside by Berber or Cyrenaican revolutionaries, Tripoli enters the Second Republic with its own uprising to its name, as a full equal able to gain seats on the Transitional National Council once the Qaddafis and their henchmen are out of the way. There will be no East/West divide. My hopes for a government of national unity as the last phase of the revolution before parliamentary elections now seem more plausible than ever. Tellingly, Tunisia and Egypt both recognized the TNC as Libya’s legitimate government through the night, as the Tripoli uprising unfolded. Regional powers can see the new Libya being born.”

It was reported on Egyptian TV (on regular news - supposedly not a joke) by a dissident Libyan advisor that in a challenge to the US, Gadhafi once told his advisors that “the US went to the Moon, so we are going to go to the Sun.” The advisor goes, “Colonel, the Moon’s cold, but the Sun’s hot. We can’t land on it, and we’d melt trying.” Gadhafi replied: “Idiot, we are going to go by night.”

Mohammad Nabbous, face of citizen journalism in Libya, is killed. ›

The death has been announced of Mohammad Nabbous, described as the “face of citizen journalism in Libya”.

Nabbous was apparently shot dead by Gaddafi forces in Benghazi on Saturday.

Known as “Mo”, Nabbous set up Libya al-Hurra TV, which broadcast raw feeds and commentary from Benghazi, on Livestream.

Andy Carvin, social media strategist at NPR, said on Twitter: “Mohammad Nabbous was my primary contact in Libya, and the face of Libyan citizen journalism. And now he’s dead, killed in a firefight.”

Sharon Lynch, TV station representative, said: “He touched the hearts of many with his bravery and indomnitable spirit. He will be dearly missed and leaves behind his young wife and unborn child.”

Al Jazeera online journalist Bilal Randeree said on Twitter: “Remember Mohammed Nabbous, known to all as Mo. His mission: to get the news about what’s happening in Libya out to the world.”

His death comes after the shooting of Al-Jazeera cameraman Ali Hassan Al Jaber in an ambush outside Benghazi earlier this week.

Facebook group has been set up in commemoration of “the man who stayed up night by day to try and spread and get awareness of what’s happening in Libya”.

R.I.P. Mohammad Nabbous. Your courage, & unrelenting spirit is nothing short of admirable. You are an inspiration. My sincere condolences to his loved ones, & to everyone who has lost someone in these horrific events. My heart goes out to you.

This is sickening…. Reblog, please. Spread the word. This isn’t just a massacre, it’s a genocide. The dictator of Libya declared war on his very own people.

BREAKING VIA NY TIMES: "The United Nations Security Council approved a measure on Thursday authorizing 'all necessary measures' to protect Libyan civilians from harm at the hands of forces loyal to Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi." ›

The measure allows not only a no-fly zone but effectively any measures short of a ground invasion to halt attacks that might result in civilian fatalities. It comes as Colonel Qaddafi warned residents of Benghazi, Libya, the rebel capital, that an attack was imminent and promised lenient treatment for those who offered no resistance.

“We are coming tonight,” Colonel Qaddafi said. “You will come out from inside. Prepare yourselves from tonight. We will find you in your closets.”

Speaking on a call-in radio show, he promised amnesty for those “who throw their weapons away” but “no mercy or compassion” for those who fight. Explosions were heard in Benghazi early Friday, unnerving residents there,  Agence-France Presse reported.

The United States, originally leery of any military involvement in Libya, became a strong proponent of the resolution, particularly after the Arab League approved a no-fly zone, something that Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called a “game changer”

I do care about what happened in Japan but... ›

I find it interesting that people’s status’s on Facebook are sympathetic towards the people of Japan but over the course of 3 weeks I have not seen one status sympathetic towards whats happening in Libya or Iran. Muammar Gaddafi has been bombing his own people for weeks. The American people just don’t care, but heaven forbid an earthquake hits Sushi and Hello-Kitty Land!!!!! The most ignorant thing I read today on facebook was, “Gas is 3.58?! What the fuck Obama, you haven’t done shit!”

Honey, President Obama has very little or nothing to do with gas prices!

it might be on facebook that people are plastic…. but people on tumblr are with souls :)))

I’m not sure calling Japan “Hello Kitty land” is warranted but how much attention something gets depends on a number of factors.  75-80% of the United States is grossly uninformed about foreign policy issues or events happening abroad in general.  Natural disasters are always sure to catch media attention because they generally create high ratings.  What’s happening in places in Libya and Iran is quite simply not understood by the vast majority of the public, so very few are likely to take interest.  To really understand an issue requires a great deal of time and effort devoted to reading and investigating various materials.  The media also takes cues from Washington as to what to cover in their daily news lineup.  The likelihood of say, CNN, doing a segment on the human rights abuses in Iran, a country that was designated membership to Bush’s “Axis of Evil” and most Americans know may or may not acquire nuclear weapons someday (which is just terrible! Nukes are for America only) is not great.  There are also different sentiments towards a natural disaster and say, civil unrest.  One tends to elicit sympathetic feelings while the other isn’t usually understood.  Most people are seriously uninformed about the politics of the Middle East and tend to hold blanketed assumptions about the entire region.  The reaction to Pakistan’s flood that left millions homeless was rather weak.  Many don’t know how to feel about certain issues but natural disasters tend to evoke strong feelings of sympathy.

It’s unfortunate but it’s not at all surprising.  The same could be said about Tumblr too.

I am speechless. Really? Really?…This is what is happening in Libya right now, this photo is just too powerful and sad. Look at the boy’s face, how he’s trying to hold his mother’s (possibly grandma’s or aunt’s face)…I am deeply upset. I just can’t believe it. A lot of kids have probably gone through or will go through what this boy just experienced. I just had to post this photo.

My heart stopped when this photo came up…I’ve been staring at this for several minutes trying to gather the words that I could use to express how this makes me feel…there are none. I want to cry.
