Letters to My Brother
BY JAMES CLEMENTI
(via flannelandsatin)
I remember my trip two years ago, to San Francisco. I took a cab to this bridge while my sister was on a conference call.
I stood there for about two hours, looking down, people watching, and wondering how far down the water was.
A girl sat next to me, and asked me, “You’re not going to jump„ are you?”
I smiled and reassured her I wasn’t. That I was just a tourist.
She then said, “You look a lot like my sister. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to make you uncomfortable. But I had to ask, can I hug you? You just look so much like her.”
I felt awkward at first, but then I realized. “She jumped?”
This girl’s face just crumpled, and she started crying. I hugged her, without a second thought, and for some reason I apologized. Not sure what else I could say.
She goes, “Those were the last words she ever spoke to me.”
And I will never forget this girl, her name was Ariana.
In the late 1880s, the body of a 16-year-old girl was pulled from the Seine. She was apparently a suicide, as her body showed no marks of violence, but her beauty and her enigmatic smile led a Paris pathologist to order a plaster death mask of her face.
In the romantic atmosphere of fin de siècle Europe the girl’s face became an ideal of feminine beauty. The protagonist of Rainer Maria Rilke’s 1910 novel The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge writes, “The mouleur, whose shop I pass every day, has hung two plaster masks beside his door. [One is] the face of the young drowned woman, which they took a cast of in the morgue, because it was beautiful, because it smiled, because it smiled so deceptively, as if it knew.”
Ironically, in 1958 the anonymous girl’s features were used to model the first-aid mannequin Rescue Annie, on which thousands of students have practiced CPR. Though the girl’s identity remains a mystery, her face, it’s said, has become “the most kissed face of all time.”

I wonder how many people commit suicide on Valentines Day every year.
Meet Jade. She killed herself three days after making this video.. Teenage suicide accounts for 31,000 suicides a year in the U.S, making it the 3rd leading age group in suicide cases. Worldwide, nearly one million people commit suicide every year.. more than those murdered or killed in war. Think before you say something hurtful to someone else. It may look like they’re okay, but they’re not. Words are more powerful than you think. Repost this not just for Jade, but for every teenager who is going through what she went through. You can help save a life. And wasn’t she just fucking gorgeous?
Found this comment on youtube: “Guys,
Jade isn’t dead, the jade everyone is saying killed herself isn’t THIS Jade.
This Jades name is Jade Wasylenko,
And after her parents found this video they finally realized she was in trouble, they made her remove all of her social networking sites, shes now in the 9th grade and she made honour roll at school, thats how I know shes alive.
But, dead or alive, her message remains the same and its one we should all hear.”

It’s all temporary… only you THINK it’s not. That’s the way to overcome it, to change the way you THINK.
Hey you. If you’re having any thoughts about suicide at all, please talk to someone. There are tons of people who care. Your life is important.
Gay Teen Suicide Rates Higher In Conservative Areas ›
A troubling report in Pediatrics confirms what you may already suspect: gay teens attempt suicide more often in politically conservative areas where schools don’t have programs supporting gay rights.
Columbia University psychologist Mark Hatzenbuehler based his research on a recent study of 32,000 11th-graders in Oregon, as well as other data on voter registration, same-sex couples, schools with gay-straight alliances, and schools with policies against bullying gay students, according to the Associated Press. Using the number of registered Democrats as an indicator of a more liberal environment, he found that in counties that had the lowest social index scores, gay, lesbian, and bisexual teens were 20% more likely to have attempted suicide than in counties with the highest scores. 25% of gay teens in the conservative counties had attempted suicide, compared to 20% in the more liberal counties.
The results were similar for straight students. Suicide attempts by heterosexual teens were 9% more common in more conservative counties. Overall, 4% of straight kids said they had tried suicide. Hatzenbuehler said this suggests, “environments that are good for gay youth are also healthy for heterosexual youth.”
While other researchers said they weren’t surprised by the findings in the report, they added that it’s important because there’s a lack of research on gay health issues. At the very least it proves that efforts to discriminate against LGBT youth, like the Tennessee bill that would ban the mere mention of homosexuality in schools, aren’t just morally wrong; They contribute to an atmosphere that puts children’s lives at risk.

An average of 5000 girls and boys commit suicide every year due to online harassment/bullying.
Make a change. Think before act.

Okay. There have been WAY too many suicide posts on tumblr lately.
It just makes me fucking sad.
First of all, if there are those of you who get a kick out of posting suicidal thoughts on tumblr just for the attention, that is not the way to go about things.
Second, for all and any of you that may be seriously contemplating suicide, I have some things to say to you. Can I start off by saying that YOU ARE FUCKING WORTH SOMETHING? That YOUR LIFE IS PRECIOUS? Every single one of these “goodbye” posts talks about how much she is going to miss mom, dad, aunt, friends etc. I want to tell you that these people that you love so much…they love you too. so much. Each and every one of you has atleast one person in your life whose world would fall apart without you in it. I know that things may be difficult, that you may feel as if everything is just crashing down on you and I know that I couldn’t possibly understand exactly what it is you are going through, but you are young. You have so much potential. You have your whole future in front of you. It would be a tragic, horrible shame to see it cut short before you had the opportunity to experience your life at its fullest potential. Take your hardships and grow stronger with them. Don’t let them take you down. This is one decision you’ll never get to take back.
Furthermore, if you’re even having the slightest glimpse of these thoughts, please talk to someone. You are not alone. I promise you that there are people who care. Lots of them.
Sincerely,
Shaena
