Eight female state senators in Georgia walked out of the Senate chambers on Thursday to protest two bills that hinder access to abortion and contraceptives. All eight female democratic senators left the chambers together after two bills they oppose passed the Republican-led Senate. From Atlanta’s WXIA, the legislation:

  • Prohibits state employees from using state health benefits to pay for abortions
  • Does not allow employees of private religious institutions to demand that their insurance policies pay for contraceptives

“We stood together to protest what we feel is absolutely a war on women here in Georgia and we want to sound the alert to Georgians,” said Sen. Nan Orrick.

Republican state senator Joshua McKoon said of the legislation, “What I would say is the war that’s being waged is on a relative minority in this country that has strong beliefs that are protected by the First Amendment.”

The bills now heads to the House, whereboth are expected to pass.

The senators who walked out: Sen. Gloria ButlerSen. Gale Davenport, Sen. Nan Orrock, Sen. Freddie Powell SimsSen. Donzella James, Sen. Miriam Paris, Sen. Valencia Seay and Sen. Horacena Tate. Looks like I’ll be spending my Friday night emailing these senators to thank them for taking a stance on an incredibly important issue.

Reproductive rights are central to the economic equality of women. It’s not a vague relationship—it’s absolutely core to the ability of women to work, to plan, to control their lives. The assault on the availability of birth control, yearly exams, and yes, abortion, is a direct assault on poor women who rely on the free services Planned Parenthood provides. This is not a periphery issue to Occupy—unless women are periphery to Occupy. Banks are not the whole story, and it would be a huge mistake to allow yourself to be fooled into thinking they are.

- Commenter on Occupy Seattle Online Events

*People capable of getting pregnant. But yes, I definitely agree. We cannot ever achieve true economic equality without reproductive freedom. The two issues are complexly intertwined, they cannot be separated.

No Abortions For Raped Military Women

The Senate recently passed the buck on voting on legislation to amend a current law stating that military women who were raped are not able to receive abortions. Cenk Uygur and Ana Kasparian discuss this terrible story.

Cenk goes a little ballistic in this one but for good reason. Forcing someone to have and care for their rapist’s child should fall under “cruel and unusual punishment.” I can understand why people just completely lose it in these circumstances.

Well its not cruel and unusual punishment because… well there is nothing to punish… they were a victim… sooo… its just… well it is punishing them I guess… but their a victim…. soo…… yeahh.

As someone who studies law, I absolutely know what the “cruel and unusual punishment” clause is and it wasn’t a mistake that I said that. We’re punishing women for being raped in this country… and for being raped while working for the government by government employees.

PLEASE REBLOG.

Do you know what FGM is? Female genital mutilation (FGM) is a hellacious practice in which at least 150 million women and girls in Africa, Asia, Europe, Australia and, yes, America are horribly mutilated. (In case you didn’t know, it, the operation is performed on 6,000 girls in America every day.) The issue was recently brought to my attention at a screening of Desert Flower which is set to open in movie theaters soon. (Watch the trailer of the film.)

Female Genital Mutilation (also known as female circumcision or cutting) is a destructive procedure in which a female’s external genitalia are partly or entirely removed or injured in order to inhibit a woman’s sexual feelings. A professional female circumciser or a traditional midwife usually performs FGM, though a healer, barber, nurse or doctor trained in Western medicine occasionally performs it. The procedure is usually performed without anesthesia under catastrophic hygienic circumstances. Some of the instruments used to perform the procedure are knives, scissors, razor blades or pieces of broken glass.

The mutilation is most often performed before puberty, often on girls between the age of four and eight, but recently it has been increasingly performed on girls only a couple of days, weeks or months old. After, the remaining parts of the outer lips are sewn together leaving a small hole for urine and menstrual flow. The scar is opened before intercourse or giving birth, which causes additional pain.

In many countries, girls who don’t have the operation are ostracized, kicked out of their village, and may not get married. Many subjected to this cruel mutilation either bleed to death or die from infections after the cutting. For the last few decades, the World Health Organization (WHO) has made numerous efforts to end FGM. The United Nations has declared February 6 as “International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation. But the most active voice protesting FGM is Waris Dirie, whose first name means “desert flower,” and whose book, Desert Flower: The Extraordinary Journey of a Desert Nomad (which became a bestseller and to date has sold 11 million copies) and is the book on which the movie is based. The movie was written and directed by Sherry Hormann, produced by Peter Herrmann, and stars top New York model Liya Kebede.

Desert Flower is the true story of Waris Dirie, a young girl whose mother tried to force her to marry a much older man at the age of 13, so she ran away and managed to find a job in London as a maid in Somalia’s Embassy. When she was 18, a regime change forced her onto London’s streets and from there, as a cleaning lady in a London fast food restaurant, where she was discovered by a famous British fashion photographer and soon after became an international top model. But Waris Dirie did not rest on her laurels; instead, she used her fame to fight against the cultural traditions and poverty that forced her to run away from her home and family. She has created The Desert Flower Foundation, hoping to end the crime of FGM by raising public awareness, organizing events and educational programs, and supporting victims of FGM.

From the Somali desert to the world’s catwalks, Waris Dirie’s story is dramatized in the movie Desert Flower, a story which I hope will impel you to take action. The movie shows the incredible journey of a young girl’s nomadic life in the deserts of Somalia to a supermodel strutting on the world’s most famous catwalks. In New York, at the peak of Waris’ career, she is interviewed by a magazine editor who asks Waris to speak about the day that changed her life, fully expecting Waris to answer that it was the day she was discovered by the famous photographer in the fast food restaurant. But instead, Waris says the day that changed her life was the day she was five and had to suffer Female Genital Mutilation. This public acknowledgment is the beginning of Waris Dirie’s role as an activist. For the past twelve years, since that interview, Waris has spoken out about this archaic ritual, has founded The Desert Flower Foundation, and dedicates her life to fighting against FGM. Make sure you see this movie when it is released in your neighborhood. And in the meantime, help end this cruel practice.

Rapist Gets No Jail Time Because Victim Was So "Inviting" ›

beautefantasy:

The victim wore a tube top, no bra, high heels and plenty of makeup on the night she was raped.

The victim and her rapist both drank plenty of alcohol that night.

She went off into the woods with her rapist. She even kissed him.

According to the judge, she was asking for it.

Yesterday, a judge in Winnipeg sentenced a man to a two year conditional sentence with no prison time for raping a woman 5 years ago. The Crown was asking for a three year jail term. However, Justice Robert Dewar believed that rapist Kenneth Rhodes was nothing more than a “clumsy Don Juan” and wasn’t really all that bad, because the victim looked so “inviting.” In sentencing, Dewar said:

“This is a different case than one where there is no perceived invitation… This is a case of misunderstood signals and inconsiderate behaviour…  I’m sure whatever signals were sent that sex was in the air were unintentional.”

But he still took these “unintentional” signals into account when sentencing Rhodes to no jail time for rape.

Dewar is saying that because she wore a tube top, raping her was not that bad.

Because she wore lots of makeup, saying the word “no” when Rhodes tore off her clothes was to be taken less seriously than if she had worn no makeup at all.

Because she had high heels on, when Rhodes violated her, he was deserving of less punishment than if she had worn flat, sensible shoes.

Using this logic, then breaking and entering into a well-cared-for house in an affluent neighbourhood is not that bad, because it’s obvious the house has lots of expensive things in it that are just begging to be stolen.

Using this logic, stealing a BMW that someone had previously given you a ride in is no big deal, because you’d already been invited to sit in the passenger seat.

Using this logic, if you are at a party and enjoying yourself and being friendly with a man you have no intention of having sex with and you are later pinned down, have your sleazy clothes forcibly removed from you by that man, that man who is bigger and stronger than you, and are raped by him, it’s less bad than if that man raped someone who was clothed head to toe in modest, sensible, prim clothing, no makeup, and flat shoes.

Should this be the message we’re sending about sexual assault?  That if you are too tempting, if you look like a slut, that you can’t expect a reasonable man to be able to control himself? That it’s not his fault - it’s yours?

Blaming the victim is a shameful practice, and Justice Dewar should know better. If he does not, then he should no longer be on the bench. Case closed.

I had planned on making some comments about this case but this article pretty much took the words out of my mouth. If you ever think that someone is being asked to be raped simply because of the clothes they are wearing, read this and then think again.

Please reblog this list so that as many people as possible can have this information at their disposal. Call your senators every day and tell them that you stand with Planned Parenthood, and think it is shameful for them to vote to defund an organization that provides necessary health care services to one in five American women, as well as children, men, and adolescents.

  • * - Denotes a mixed voting record on reproductive rights
  • If your state does not appear on this list, you have no anti-choice senators, please refer to the list of Pro-Choice Senators by State.

South Dakota GOP pushes bill to legalize ‘homicide’ in defense of the unborn ›

In South Dakota, a group of Republican state legislators have crafted a bill that would expand the legal definition of “justifiable homicide” in a way that’s plain and unambiguous: they’re trying to legalize the murder of abortion doctors.
